about

Oulanka National Park is situated just below the arctic circle in the east of Finland. I arrived there on the 1st of June and stayed till the morning of the 14th of June 2019. I made 50 recordings. It was my first time to be so close to the arctic circle and to experience twenty-four hour daylight.

Oulanka National Park really ‘ticks all the boxes,’ a place to stay (rather than camping), very quiet with little or no manmade noise, safe, great undisturbed wildlife, a small shop, maybe some internet access, with at least some marked trails to get around the area easily, then it has to be reasonably easy to get to (There is even a bus to the visitor center on weekdays, or a bus to the village nearby on weekends).

Only downside was that the birds were very few and far between, so much so that it is amazing I recorded anything at all, outside of that area there seemed to be few or no birds at all ! The few birds I heard were mainly along a part of the river only a few minutes walk from my cabin. I was fortunate to have good settled weather for the whole of my stay. Almost all the recordings on this production were made in the ‘night’ or early morning.

Because of the 24 hour daylight I had expected there to be birdsong all night but this was not the case. Except for a lone Redwing singing there was silence till later in the night when a weak chorus of birds would begin. There were so few birds that most birds I heard, I managed to record.

Most recordings were made using a pair of Sennheiser MKH8020 microphones, there were some recordings I needed the Cardioid response of the Rode NT1A and NT2A microphones, these were amplified to line level with a Sound Devices MixPre, then recorded on a Marantz PMD661 (set to 48Khz / 24 Bit).
